In 1850 Richard Nance is found in Rusk County, Texas census. A Sarah
Nance is also on 1850 Rusk Census living with Dempsey Foreman. In the next
residence was J.J.S.H.P. Bishop married to Elizabeth (a Nance, as noted on a
census index on usgenweb.org) Further investigation proved a J.J.S.H.P. Bishop
married Elizabeth Nance March 9, 1837 in Talladega, Alabama. Elizabeth’s
parents were Sarah Winburn Nance and William Nance.
(familysearch.org and ancestry.com). It is very likely that Richard Winburn Nance is the son of Sarah Winburn
(sometimes spelled Winbourne/Winborn) Nance and the
brother of Elizabeth Nance.
Richard Winburn Nance and Sylvestra Frestwell - moved to Rusk county,
Texas between 1845 and 1850. He
had his mother - Sarah Winburn (Foreman)
Nance as a widow with him. His
sister Elizabeth Bishop, was also in
Rusk, Texas, along with her six children. Richard divorced his wife,
Sylvestra and married a Mary B. Dixon around 1858
and moved back to
Tallapoosa county, Alabama, taking his three older boys, Benjamin,
Samuel, and John with them.
Benjamin fought and died in the civil war.
Richard went to war one week
after his son Benjamin's death, in the 45th
Alabama Company C division, He
was a POW in Danville, Kentucky. He was
traded for a Union soldier in 1862 and paroled at Salisbury, North
Carolina, May 2, 1865. Richard's other son Samuel was discharged for
being a minor.
Richard used to go buffalo hunting in Oklahoma. They would kill enough
meat to last the winter. They built
an ice house to store the meat
through the hot times.
