Placido Marchese was born in Palermo Sicily in 1838. He married Rosalie Anello. They had atleast 5 children, Maria, Giovanni, Salvadore, Teresa and Mario. Notes for ROSALIE ANELLO:

Rosalie Anello was born in Palermo, Sicily. One of her brothers is Antonino (Anthony) Anello, whose son is Benedetto Anello. Benedetto was the cousin of Mario Marchese that helped the family get started in San Diego around 1926.He got Mario a job at the S.D. Gas & Electric. When Benedetto was a young man in Palermo, he worked in the gardens at the Villa Tasca  which was the villa and gardens of Count Tasca D'Almerita. He also had a wine dynasty with other land, part of the Regaliali wine estate. It is still held by the family. It is famous because Wagner was inspired to write the end of his Parisifal while vacationing at the Villa.

Benedetto's wife is Angelina Bavuso. Their daughter is Nancy Anello, of San Diego.

Benedetto came to San Diego in 1915. He worked until retirement at Balboa Park as a landscaper. After that, he worked at Convair. He died in 1972 and is buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego.

Mario told his children that his mother, Rosalia, died when she was pushing him in the park, he was 3 months old. It is possible that park could of been the grounds of the Villa.

3.  MARIO3 MARCHESE (PLACIDO2, GIOVANNI1) was born September 14, 1878 in Palermo, Sicily, and died August 07, 1946 in San Diego CA.  He married DOMENICA PAVIA February 1906 in New York, New York, daughter of GUISEPPE PAVIA and GUISEPINA`.  She was born 1893 in New York, and died December 20, 1926 in San Jose, CA.

Notes for MARIO MARCHESE:

Mario came to America from Palermo on the ship Tartar Prince. He arrived in New York Harbor on July 4th, 1903. This is according to his Naturalization papers.  He told his son Joe, that he had worked on the ship to get his passage over here. His sister Teresa, sister-in-law Maria and her 3 children John, Rose and Charles, also came on the boat from Palermo. In New York,  Mario worked for the Pavias in the furniture hauling business. He also worked as a city laborer. He married their daughter Dominica (Minnie was her nickname) in 1907.Minnie was only 14.They  had their  lst child Rose,in 1908. According to the 1910 Census, Mario and Minnie lived with her parents at E 114th St. in Manhattan New York and at that time their first child , Rosalia was 2 and they had a 1 month old baby, Benjamin. He must of died before they moved to San Jose, because there is no record of him there. They moved to San Jose, Ca. about 1910. They lived there about 15 years and had the rest of the children, starting with Albert and ending with Mario Jr. They had 10 live births in all. Mario Sr. worked for the Charles C. Navelit Nursery in San Jose. He was a tree surgeon, could graft any plant and grow it. He really knew his business and also alot about agriculture.  He moved to San Diego in 1928, after his wife Minnie died in 1926. She was 33 when she died.He came and brought all his children on the train, except John and Joe, they came on a truck with the furniture. Mario had hired a man who went to the fields in the valley and got fruit to sell in San Jose. Joe and JOhn would work for him by picking up the watermelons and then putting them off the truck to where they were sold.

They first stayed next door  to his cousin,Benedetto Anello on National Ave. He worked for the San Diego Gas Co. and was a powder man, dropping dynamite in holes to set telephone poles. There lst house was on National Ave.and Crosby St., behind a store. The address was 2002 National Ave. The house was torn down for one of the pillars of the Coronado Bridge. They lived in many rental houses. The City Directory shows that in 1930 they lived at 420 17th St.

It is told by son Victor and Joe that Mario lost his job in San Jose because the neighbor , Cardinelli, had a whisky still that was kept in Mario's basement. One day the police came, someone had turned them in, and took Mario off to jail. Uncle Salvadore bailed him out. He lost his job and good name because of the incident, so that is why he came to San Diego. This was during prohibition and the police gathered up countless stills and made many arrests during these years in San Jose.

Mario had a noticable scar on his neck, which he attributed to being thrown from a horse in Italy. He was badly hurt, but received no medical attention.

He later married again, but was very unhappy with his choice, and they parted. He than stayed with his kids, one at a time, until his death in 1946.

Notes for DOMENICA PAVIA:

Domenica (Minnie), is buried at Santa Clara Catholic Mission Cemetary in San Jose. Minnie loved to play the piano, sing and whistle.Mario even bought her a player piano. She would go to the nearby music store to listen to music, then she would come home and play it. According to son Joe "The man from the music store would come to our house to listen to her play the piano. The only time we were allowed into the living room was when my mother would play the piano for us.  She didn't speak Italian and wouldn't let my father speak Italian to us. She was very "American". My mother was very neat and immaculant. She kept all of the kids in line and clean. We were always dressed very nicely. My dad and her always had lots of fun together." She was hard working, neat and beautiful. Loved to garden and was a great cook.  The family attended Sacred Heart Church, on Willow Ave. San Jose. It was 2 blocks away.   She had 10 live births between 1910 and 1926. Her grave stone is a beautiful heart, showing how much she was loved.

Mario  and Minnie first lived in New York, at 205 E. 106th St. , where Rosalie was born in 1908. The birth certificate claims that Domenica had already had one child before Rosie, so the baby probably died. In 1910 the census shows they lived with her parents at E.114th St. They lived in San Jose, CA. at 759 Palm St. for about 15 years.

When she was hospitalized for Mastoids, she was admitted Dec. 8 and operated on Dec. 9th. and was there for 20 days before her death  on December 20, 1926.

Minnie had a sister, Rose Molone and a brother Alfredo that both lived in New York. In 1910 the record also shows she had a brother Fred, that apparently died before Minnie did.According to an old picture, she had 2other siblings, one named Joey, and the other Jenny. They also died before Minnie died.

4.  SALVADORE3 MARCHESE (PLACIDO2, GIOVANNI1) was born December 21, 1871 in Palermo Sicily, and died February 03, 1944 in In San Jose.  He married MARY (MARIA) MORABITO.  She was born 1873 in Messina, Sicily, and died January 1959 in San Jose, CA.

Notes for SALVADORE MARCHESE:

Salvadore came to America on the S.S. Sicilian Prince in 1902. He sent for the rest of the family and took care of them in New York and New Jersey until around 1907. His father Placido had already come to America and met him at the boat. It could be that PLacido also helped with the family.  Mario, Teresa, Maria and her 3 children all came in 1903.

Salvadore and the rest of the children all came to San Jose Ca. around 1908. Salvadore was a produce broker or fruit merchant  and good at promoting. He had also done this in Sicily. When the church at the end of Palm St.in San Jose  had a carnival, he would run it and it would be 2 blocks long.  He always had plenty of money, but the story is that he was NOT in the Mafia, they wouldn't let him in. He was a very kind and generous man to take care of all those children, but could be very mean when drinking. He did succomb to alcoholism in his later years, and it is said it led to his death. His death certificate gives Bronchial Asthma and chronic myocarditis as the cause of death. All of his sons were successful in business, they were good salesmen. The oldest son, his step-son John, was the owner of the big distillery in San Jose. The sons also owned a cigar company a candy company and a liquor store. The son John, was the first one around to get a new cadillac.

The funeral director for Salvadore's funeral was the Rancadore Mortuary. The Rancadore family  were the ones that were friends of the Marchese's back in Sicily and had wrote to Salvadore in New York telling him about beautiful San JOse Ca.

Notes for MARY (MARIA) MORABITO:

Mary was the wife of the other brother, John (Giovanni), but when he died Mary came to America and married Salvadore. She came with her 3 children and  Teresa on the ship Nord America in 1903. It went to Palermo, then to Napoli, before coming to America. This ship sunk after leaving America.

Salvadore took care of all of them and ended up marrying Mary. He was working in Niagara Falls and they were married there. Mary and Salvadore had 2 children in New York, Eugene and Albert. They came to San Jose about 1909 and they had 4 more children there. Her and Salvadore also took care of Teresa's children after both parent's died. When Rose Nicolini's husband died, this is the child Rose had with Giovani, she also came to live with Salvadore and Maria with her 2 children. Maria was a very hard worker and took care of all of the kids, about 15. She sewed for the church. They fought alot because of Salvadore's drinking problem.

Maria was a faithful worker in her church. She was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, Mother of the Rosary, and Mothers of Sorrow Sodalities of Sacred Heart Church.

Daughter Nancy recalls that her mother made Nancy read the obituaries out of the paper to her, then she would take Nancy with her to the various funeral homes to pray over the dead.

Information about the ship she came on, Nord America:

NORD AMERICA

The "Nord America" was built in 1882 by J.Elder & Co, Glasgow as the "Stirling Castle" for Thos Skinner & Co, London. She was a 4,826 gross ton ship, length 418.6ft x beam 50ft, two funnels, three masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 15 knots when built. Launched on 21/1/1882, she was used on the tea trade from China and was world famous for her rapid voyages. Purchased by the Italian company, La Veloce in 1883, she was fitted with accommodation for 90-1st, 100-2nd and 1,223-3rd class passengers and renamed "Nord America" but, due to her fame, was allowed to retain her original name as well. She commenced her first voyage from Genoa to South America on 13/11/1883 and in 1884 was named "Nord America" only. In 1885 she was chartered by the British government for carriage of troops to Suakin, Sudan and in 1899 was chartered to the Russian government and used as a troopship between Odessa and Vladivostock in connection with the Boxer rebellion in China. Rebuilt by Palmers Co Ltd in 1900, re-engined with less powerful engines to give a speed of 13.5knots, accommodation altered to carry 90-2nd and 1,223-3rd class only, funnels lengthened and her three masts reduced to two. On 27/5/1901 she started her first voyage between Palermo, Naples and New York and commenced her last passenger round voyage from Genoa to Naples and New York on 25/3/1908 (58 round voyages). In December 1908 she was used as an accommodation ship for survivors of the earthquake at Messina. She was then employed solely as a cargo steamer, and on 5/12/1910 while on passage from Buenos Aires with a cargo of horses, she ran aground on the Moroccan coast. She was refloated and towed to Genoa, laid up and was scrapped in 1911. [North Atlantic Seaway, vol.3, p.1264-1271, by N.R.P. Bonsor] [South Atlantic Seaway, p.278-279, by N.R.P. Children of SALVADORE MARCHESE and MARY MORABITO are:

                   i.    EUGENE4 MARCHESE, b. 1905, New York; d. 1968, San Jose, CA in Agnew Asylum.

Notes for EUGENE MARCHESE:

Several stories are told about son Geno. He had epilepsy, which made his life different. At times the stories sound like he is a little off, but it was the effect of the disease that was not treatable then. Victor tells about Geno always going on his roof and threatening to jump off. Joe tells about Geno disrupting the elementary school, which was on the nearby corner. When all the kids were in class, Geno would stand outside and keep sneezing real loud, then all the teachers would close the windows in order to keep out the sound.

But, according to Joe, Geno was brilliant ! He had an exceptional mind. He also was an expert at pool. People from all over would come to try and beat him at the game, but he was the champ. They had a pool table in Salvador's basement. Geno and Joe were very close, when Geno was going to have an attack, he would tell Joe to leave, he didn't want to hurt him.

Notes for TERESA MARCHESE:

Sister of Salvadore and Mario, she came to America on the boat with Maria. She went to a convent in New Jersey, to become a Nun. Uncle Salvadore convinced her to leave and she met and married Joseph Zicardi. They had Rosalia, before coming to San Jose. They lived next door to Teresa's brother Mario. They had 5 children, only 4 lived past infancy. She died giving birth to the 6th child.  After Teresa's death, the children went to Abruzzi, Italy with their father, he died and they were put in an orphanage. Jenny went into a convent. Salvadore and Mary had to work hard to get them released to come back here. Jenny (Giovanna) stayed there and later died. The other 3 girls, Rose, Margaret and Edie, came and lived with Mary and Salvadore.

Notes for JOSEPH ZICCARDI:

Some census records have the name spelled Ziccardi. Guiseppe Zicardi was a Shoe Maker and in San Jose his Shoe Repair shop was in their basement in the house on Palm Ave.

ii.    ROSE ZICCARDI, b. September 09, 1910, Lodi, New Jersey; d. July 02, 2007, San Jose, CA.

Notes for ROSE ZICCARDI:

Rose Zicardi was born in Lodi, New Jersey, in 1910. Her parents were Guiseppe Ziccardi and Teresa Marchese. Both of her parents were from Italy: Guiseppe from Abruzzo, Italy and Teresa from Palermo, Sicily. They met and married in New Jersey then came to San Jose, and the rest of the children were born there: Pasquale 1912, Giovana (Jenny) 1913, Margaret Mary 1915, & Aida (Edie) 1916.  After her mother Teresa died in 1919 (during childbirth), her father Guiseppe went to New Jersey and they lived there for 1 year. Because he had to work, the 4 girls were put into a boarding school. Because he was only allowed to see them  once a month, that was not satisfactory , so he took them back to Abruzzi Italy where he had one relative. . In 1927 Rose and sisters came back to America, stayed in Lodi with the relatives for about 1 week and then returned to San Jose and lived with Aunt Maria and Uncle Salvadore. Rose remembers landing at Ellis Island and having to spend the night. The next day one of Placido's son's came to get her. Her memories of the boat trip are that it was the first time she had ever seen double-beds, the food was awful, the ship, Dante, was much better than the ship going to Italy, it even had a cafeteria. When she went to Italy, her Dad had to stand in line a long time for food, and carry 5 plates to bring back for all of them to eat. When they made the voyage to Italy the sister Giovana (Jenny) was with them, but she died while there of Tuberculosis. On the Dante, because the 3 girls were alone, the ship gave them a guardian.

According to the Ship's Manifest, they came on the Dante Alighieri , leaving Naples on Oct. 22, 1927 and arriving in America on Nov. 4. Rose was 17, Margarita 12, and Ida 11. They lived in the Ferrazzano area of Abruzzi ,central, area of Italy. They lived 6 years in Italy before coming back to America. While in Italy their father died in about 1925. Rose was put in her uncle Francesco Zicard's home to live with him, his wife and son Guiseppe. Margaret was sent to live with a family that supposedly wanted to raise a little girl, but in reality, they just used her for a maid. Aida was put in to an orphanage. Rose remembers going to visit at the orphanage once a month in a horse and wagon. Finally one day when a Priest was visiting the Zicardi home where Rose lived, he asked her if she had any relatives in America that could keep her and her sisters. Rose wrote her Uncle Salvadore and Aunt Maria, and they began the struggle to repatriate them back to America. It took a while because the family that had Margaret wouldn't let her go. It ended up that the police had to rescue her.

Rose never married, she was always the care-giver, especially because the mother died when the girls were so young. Margaret married and had one son Raymond, that drowned in an accidental fishing accident. Edie married her half-cousin Placido Jr. Marchese and they lived in New Jersey and had one daughter, Maria.

Josephine told the story of "stomping grapes" as a little girl. When they lived in San Jose, their dad would buy a truck load of grapes once a year. The truck would come to the house and the grapes would be put into a large barrel. She was so impressed that the grapes were so very big and beautiful. Her and sister Helen ( she doesn't remember if the boys did this also) would put rubber boots on and be told to go into the barrel and "stomp on the grapes" until they could get the juice to run out for wine.

She also remembers the entire family camping out in tents in the SAn Jose orchards to do "prune picking" for the annual harvest. They would sleep in the tents and pick prunes from under the trees on their knees. They would get paid per tree. Their mother Domenica (Minnie) would always use that extra money for something special for the family. She remembers that one year it was a new carpet. They were definately temporary "prune picking" migrant workers ( they did have a home.)
