THE SHOES
I had just left his funeral
my hand held a rose
When I peaked in his closet
past his dusty old clothes
And there I saw my dad's shoes
They were old and tattered
matched nothing he owned
But they had carried the greatest man I'd ever known
I just stood and stared at those shoes
I could still see his face
my heart swelled with pride
As I pictured him soft- steppin through each case he tried
Because boy could he preach in those shoes
When it wasn't damnable whiskey
it was water from moonshine
He took the facts....took their money
but he never did whine
Because he loved every moment in those shoes
For those shoes had carried him
for fifty- plus years
they heard free advice offered
to each young lawyer's ear
They could sure tell some
stories......those shoes
I stood in the doorway
tears stained my face
Because I knew I could never take that great lawyer's place
But Lord please let me walk in those shoes
